Mitch R. hired 360 Electric to motorize a new driveway gate and made it clear he wanted a single-swing operator that would run off the house’s 120 VAC supply. Instead, Jeff Goldium’s crew fitted a battery-powered operator that only runs from a battery — the 120 VAC feed merely trickles charge to keep that battery topped off, so a missing or discharged battery leaves the gate completely inoperable. From the start the gate wouldn’t close and seal properly, and every time he opened or closed it the control box emitted three beeps; he assumed that was a motion warning but later discovered the beeps meant the battery was dying. After two weeks the unit stopped working entirely. The problem traced back to a faulty and potentially dangerous power connection made by Goldium’s electrician, Rudy, which meant the battery was never being charged — Mitch likely wouldn’t have known the unit was battery dependent if that wiring mistake hadn’t exposed it. Goldium refused to take responsibility, so Mitch filed a complaint with the California Contractor’s State License Board; the CSLB ruled in his favor, ordering a full refund and removal of the unwanted equipment.
