The Verdict

Design My Solar is a company with a serious track record of broken promises and project chaos. One customer signed in August 2021 for a February 2022 install, got assured in writing it would happen April 20, then was told the day before that the company had no equipment and the staffer who made the promise no longer worked there. Another paid in November 2020, watched panels go up in March 2021, and by March 2022 still had no working system while the company blamed the city, the utility, and even the customer. We found 15 reviews describing multi-month delays and zero accountability, compared to 46 praising smooth installs. The post-sale support score of 3.2 tells the real story. While some early customers report solid performance after years of use, recent patterns show a company that can't manage its supply chain or keep commitments. The sales process is friendly until you sign, then communication collapses. If you're considering Design My Solar because of a competitive quote, understand you're gambling on whether you'll join the satisfied early customers or the recent ones still waiting for power a year after signing.

If you need solar installed on a firm timeline or value responsive communication after the sale, look elsewhere. The risk of multi-month delays and unresponsive project management is too high.

Reviews That Shaped Our Verdict

Lia Aranda
GoogleMar 2, 2022

Lia hired the company to install a residential solar system that kicked off in November 2020. Installers put up the panels in March 2021, but by March 2022 the array still hadn't been activated. She endured a parade of passed‑along phone calls and shifting explanations as staff and management pushed responsibility around — blaming the city, the utility, and at times even her — without ever providing a clear timeline. Neighbors nearby ended up with the same stalled projects, so the delay looked systemic rather than isolated. The most striking result: hardware in place for a year but no follow‑through — 16 months after the project began, the system remained offline.

Brian Chacon nearly gave up on solar after his first integrator’s installation went horribly wrong, but conversations with Glendale building inspectors convinced him to give it one more try. He found LA Solar Group and immediately felt the difference: they moved fast, smoothed out permit and scheduling headaches, and made the installation feel effortless. Because of his prior bad experience he stayed more involved during the work; the team welcomed his questions, accommodated his requests, and took the time to walk him through each step. Nearly three years after the install he still receives periodic calls and emails from LA Solar Group, a follow-up that underscored their commitment and stuck with him long after the panels were up.

In August 2021 Russ signed a contract to have a Tesla Powerwall 2 installed and was promised by salesman John C that the job would be finished by February 2022 — that completion date went into the contract. He paid $1,000 up front for plans and designs, then watched February pass with no crew, no updates and no installation. After posting a negative review he received a call from a man named Tigran, who apologized and put a new firm date of April 20, 2022 in writing; the company’s project portal even showed the job as "Confirmed" for that date. On April 19 he phoned to reconfirm and, after several unanswered calls, reached the marketing department and then the operations manager, only to learn the install was canceled — the company blamed a shortage of batteries from Tesla, said Tigran no longer worked there, and informed him there were many customers ahead of him. He ended up out the $1,000 with no installation and no clear remedy, and discovered that paying by bank debit left him little practical recourse. The clearest takeaway: written dates in the contract and a "Confirmed" portal status did not prevent repeated no-shows, and the company shifted blame rather than accept 책임 for,

John Vincent
GoogleFeb 2, 2022

John Vincent hired LA Solar Group for three separate home installs across several years — a first system in 2017, another in 2018–19, and then a much larger project that began in September 2019 (more than $180,000 in equipment and work) that finally wrapped up in early March 2022. He expected better treatment on the big job but watched the service quality decline with each visit: the office communication repeatedly broke down, approvals and scheduling dragged, and the process became increasingly stressful. The crews on site, by contrast, stayed professional and friendly, and the components and final installation met his expectations. Once the system was finished it ran flawlessly — production matched projections, and the Tesla Powerwalls have performed well at offsetting steep time‑of‑use charges. What lingered with him most was the long, difficult path to completion (September 2019 to March 2022) and the persistent frustration with office communication, even though the finished system delivered the performance he wanted.

Christian Dias
GoogleDec 31, 2020

Christian Dias had a residential solar system installed in 2015 and watched his electricity bill plunge from about $270 a month to virtually nothing. He originally shopped SolarCity (now Tesla Solar) but balked at their price; after a Yelp search he discovered LA Solar, which not only carried much stronger ratings but quoted him roughly 25% less for the same capacity. LA Solar moved quickly, installed the array and got it up and running without delay. Over the next five years, when a handful of issues popped up, he found the team responsive and able to correct problems fast. The memorable part of his experience was the combination of a substantially lower up‑front cost for identical equipment and reliable follow‑up service — the two together delivered near-zero bills and lasting peace of mind.
