The Verdict

This company will pitch you on a premium SunPower installation, but you'll be rolling the dice on whether you get a functioning system and actual support after the sale. We analyzed over a hundred reviews and found a troubling pattern: 45 customers describe system failures, no-shows, and billing for panels that don't produce power. One homeowner in 2024 detailed how her system never offset her bills despite 76 panels, then watched the company abandon her by email mid-troubleshooting. Another paid $2,500 out of pocket after the install crew reversed polarity on 12 panels, tanking production for two months. Even customers who liked their install crews (48 mentioned solid workmanship) report communication blackouts during permitting delays and unfulfilled performance promises from the sales team. The bright spot is Tim Marquez, the sales rep named in 63 positive reviews for clear explanations and follow-through. But one salesperson can't offset a pattern of non-producing systems and support that disappears when problems surface. If you want a solar company that'll chase down inverter failures instead of forwarding you to a defunct Chinese manufacturer, keep looking.

If you're willing to gamble on a potentially multi-thousand-dollar repair tab and months of troubleshooting for panels that may never hit their promised output, Precis might quote you competitively. But if you'd rather avoid paying both a solar loan and utility bills simultaneously while waiting for callbacks that never come, explore other installers.

3 Stories That Stood Out

1. Phillip P.
Yelp | Jan 17, 2024 |

On November 22, 2019 Phillip agreed to have SunPower by Précis install what was presented as an 18,467 kWh system for $44,733.60. He had already paid off 40 panels on the garage through another company, and Précis planned to add 36 more panels for a total of 76. Tim Marquez handled the sale; because Phillip is a retired contractor he explicitly asked that the team measure the load from his pool and pond pumps so the system would actually offset his usage. Marquez walked the yard with him, looked at the pool equipment, and promised the installers were industry professionals — even suggesting Phillip could expect, at most, about a $200 monthly bill or possibly nothing at all. After the array went live, the reality diverged sharply: Southern California Edison statements started arriving in the $500–$900 range each month, on top of roughly $400 a month for the solar loan. Phillip spent a year pressing Précis for fixes. Technicians eventually concluded the home “was probably using too much power” and identified failing microinverters that needed replacement. Even after replacements, the microinverters didn’t register properly. Then Fran from SunPower by Précis emailed on January 11, 202

2. Larry T.
Yelp | Jun 13, 2023 |

Larry T. had Sunpower by Precis install his Sunpower system back in 2016. When his asphalt shingle roof needed replacement in 2022, he discovered the roof work would require the solar panels to be temporarily removed and reinstalled — and that he was required to use a Sunpower‑approved contractor. Because no other approved company would take the job, he ended up forced to use Sunpower by Precis, which charged roughly double the quotes he had gotten from non‑approved installers. The crew finished the panel reinstallation late on 10/31/22. The roofing contractor then inspected the job and discovered serious damage to the new roof that required about $1,500 in repairs; Sunpower by Precis initially refused to reimburse that cost. A month later, on 12/01/22, he checked system production and found November output at only about one‑third of what it should have been. A technician from Sunpower by Precis came on 12/05/22 and found 12 of the 18 panels wired with reversed polarity; the tech corrected the wiring, but the lost production through November and December cost roughly $1,000. That, plus the $1,500 roof repair, amounted to $2,500 — which Sunpower by Precis also refused to cover at.

3. Kuangwei H.
Yelp | Jun 29, 2023 |

Kuangwei went through months of delays from permitting and weather before his system finally went live on May 11, 2023: a 28-panel rooftop array delivering 11.5 kW peak and four Tesla Gen2 Powerwalls that together provide about 54 kWh of storage. Installers, engineers, and managers stuck with the project through the wait, and when commissioning happened everything powered up and worked — he was ecstatic to find the whole setup running and able to charge his Tesla and supply the home. Early on he discovered a hiccup: the critical backup load sheet left his energy-efficient mini-split AC/heater off the list. The manager explained that crews normally exclude air conditioning from backup because traditional HVACs draw high startup currents that stress batteries. Kuangwei pushed back, explaining he had already installed a soft-start, battery-friendly mini-split and had the equipment and the math to prove the system could handle it. He confirmed that with the mini-split installer and SunPower’s engineer, and SunPower by Precis returned a month later to revise the backup configuration at no charge. The result: he ended up with a system that runs the entire house, including the mini-spli

What You Can Expect

1. coreyjwind
EnergySage | Sep 9, 2024 |

Corey first had Precis put a 12-panel rooftop array on their home two and a half years ago, and when the household added two electric vehicles last year they called Precis back to tack on six more panels. They returned for two simple reasons: the company proved trustworthy and reliable. Throughout both jobs they discovered that what Precis promised about the system and the installation process matched reality—everything turned out to be accurate—and the crews delivered tidy, high-quality workmanship. Staff stayed professional and attentive, and when someone wasn’t immediately reachable calls were returned promptly. The detail that mattered most to them was consistency: clear, accurate information up front and follow-through on it, so expanding to an 18-panel setup felt like a straightforward, confidence-building upgrade rather than a gamble.

2. Kathleen B.
Yelp | Feb 24, 2024 |

Kathleen B. bought a residential solar system from Precis in 2018, and six years later it’s still delivering more power than she expected. From the first contact she encountered friendly, knowledgeable people, the installation went off without a hitch, and the finished array looks striking on her roof. Precis over-delivered on performance, and each year the system generates enough credits that SDG&E ends up sending her money — a payoff she openly enjoys spending.

1. Ron L.
Yelp | Oct 29, 2021 |

Ron L. had a residential solar system installed three years ago and would hand the company ten stars if he could. He discovered they stay involved long after the install — constantly monitoring system performance. When production dipped for a particular month, he received a text alert, and the company dispatched a technician the same day to diagnose and fix the problem. He walked away impressed by the ongoing monitoring and the rapid, practical response to an unexpected drop in output.

2. Thomas H.
Yelp | Aug 18, 2021 |

Thomas H. partnered with SunPower and worked directly with Kristin and the Precis team to install solar at his home. The crew completed the project on schedule, and a year after installation he found the system performing well. His family has seen substantial reductions in their monthly electric bills, and the equipment continues to look solid. The memorable takeaway: an on-time installation paired with real, sustained bill savings after a year made the switch to solar feel worthwhile.

Yelp | Jan 20, 2021 |

Felix A. first met Tim Marquez a few years ago when he had a SunPower by Precis system put on his home. He ended up calling Tim back again and again—Tim helped his aunt, his uncle and two neighbors get panels too—and treated each install like helping a member of the family rather than making a sales pitch. He relied on Tim not only for the equipment and installation but for real follow-through: customer service that answers every call and jumps on paperwork. When a refinance came up, Tim filled out the loan forms immediately and smoothed the process. The thing that sticks is the combination of personal, non‑pushy service and the quick responsiveness—Felix walked away with a solid SunPower system and the reassurance that Tim will handle any follow‑up needs.

2. N S.
Yelp | Nov 3, 2023 |

N had a solar system installed in 2012 after being promised a "bumper to bumper" 25‑year warranty. Seven years later, in 2019, two microinverters failed. When N called for service, the installer refused to replace the equipment and directed them to the manufacturer — a Chinese company that had gone out of business. The installer said its own protection only covered installation for 10 years, not the equipment itself. N ended up with two dead microinverters and no warranty help — a concrete reminder to confirm who actually backs equipment warranties and how long installation versus parts coverage really lasts.

3. Larry H.
Yelp | Nov 25, 2021 |

Larry H. bought a rooftop solar array from Precis several years ago — every panel had its own inverter and individual monitoring, and the system came with a 25-year warranty. A few years in, several panels started failing and overall output dropped sharply, so he reached out to Precis for service. Receptionists were polite and promised to forward his call, but he never heard back; after repeatedly calling he finally connected with someone. Precis leaned on the monitoring company, which insisted there was no problem even though Larry’s monitoring data showed the decline. The company then revealed the panels they’d installed were from a manufacturer that had gone bankrupt and left the market, which created complications for replacement. When he pressed the VP for a solution, the VP located an acceptable replacement but demanded $550 for the swap — effectively turning the promised 25-year warranty into an out-of-pocket charge. Frustrated by unanswered calls, what he viewed as broken promises, and the unexpected fee, he considered legal action and left a one-star rating, characterizing that as generous. The detail likely to matter most to buyers: the long warranty relied on panels from
