The Verdict

Tag Construction will finish your roof on time, then surprise you with hidden costs at the end. Reviews show a pattern we couldn't ignore. One homeowner signed a contract, got a mid-job "discount" of $3,000 to stay, then opened the final bill to find an extra $3,000 in tile replacements the crew never mentioned during two weeks of work. No photos, no invoice, no heads-up. Another paid for a "lifetime warranty" roof only to spot spiderwebs on sections the supervisor swore were replaced. We found 30 complaints about missed schedules, zero communication, and crews so green the owner had to come back and redo their shoddy work. The company admits its own workmanship is subpar in legal correspondence. Even loyal customers report leaks within warranty and vague excuses about wind velocity. Seventeen reviewers flagged workmanship problems, 24 cited post-sale support failures, and 40 called out chaotic project management. If a contractor tells you a tarp costs $385, then bills you $500 with no explanation, that sets the tone for everything else.

If you value transparency and want to know what you're paying before the bill arrives, look elsewhere. Tag may finish on schedule, but the surprise charges and repair callbacks aren't worth the risk.

3 Stories That Stood Out

1. Stephanie O.
Yelp | Feb 25, 2022 |

Stephanie O. hired Tag to replace a roof and install solar on her ranch-style home just ahead of heavy rains, after meeting the owner (Karl) through a referral and appreciating his upfront claim that he wasn’t the cheapest. She signed because the house needed a full roof repair and they offered to put a tarp on immediately at no charge (normally $385) while waiting to start. The tarp went on poorly, the house still leaked, and the crew didn’t return for two days — the first of several red flags. Work didn’t begin when promised and no one called to explain; she had to call the office to learn the start date had slipped another week. Nervous, she shopped around and found a reputable contractor who was $6,000 cheaper. When she told Karl she wanted to switch, he responded that the job was about to start and that, because they were under contract, he’d need to consult his attorney. He also changed the tarp price to $500. He later offered to reduce the total by $3,000; even after that they were still $3,000 higher than the other bid, but they reluctantly agreed to avoid conflict. At project close, the final invoice included a charge for 400 broken tiles at $9 each — roughly the same sum—

2. J V.
Yelp | Jul 24, 2020 |

J V. hired Tag in July 2019 to replace a roof, waterproof a deck with a Dex-o-Tex system, and install solar panels, all supposedly finished by November 1, 2019. When November came and went, they involved a lawyer by January 2020; Tag later admitted to the lawyer that the workmanship was shoddy. A year later, the job still isn't complete and they expect to pay thousands out of pocket to fix much of what was done. The most striking problem was the bait-and-switch on materials and systems: Karl had promised a 50-year roof but crews installed a lower-grade tile only guaranteed for 25 years, left the roof lumpy with globs of mastic, and never installed the Dex-o-Tex deck system that had been discussed. Neighbors who paid similar prices walked away with attractive 50-year roofs finished in days, while J V. ended up with a messy, damaged site — old roofing debris filled a neighbor’s yard, glue and paint pooled in the garden creating toxic residue, resin pots and other items went missing, and paperwork and licensing with the city and SDG&E looked questionable. What lingers most is the physical damage to the property and the knowledge that they'll have to hire others and spend significant,额

3. Amy Z.
Yelp | Mar 22, 2017 |

Amy Z. first hired TAG back in 2009 for a flat roof, and Tom, the owner, left a solid impression. She turned to them again when her tile roof needed redoing, but this time Carl handled the estimate and largely disappeared from the jobsite. After the crew finished, she noticed spider webs on a section that was supposed to have been replaced and asked Carl to inspect it with her; he reassured her the work was complete. Two months later she discovered about 20 puncture holes across the wood paneling of her historic home’s ceiling, with small chips missing around each hole. She pushed TAG to make it right and asked for Tom to redo the work. Although Tom agreed, Carl tried to take the repair back over — she refused and had to call Tom directly to stop him from handling the fix. Tom ended up patching the ceiling and redoing the web-covered portion of the roof, which made clear that the section Carl had sworn was finished never had been. The detail that sticks: roughly 20 punctures in the ceiling and the untouched, webbed roof tiles — and Tom’s repair work that ultimately corrected those specific failures.

What You Can Expect

01

1. B S.
Yelp | Jun 2, 2025 |

This homeowner reposted a review after the original disappeared, describing a December 2023 roof replacement. They highlighted AJ and the tear-off crew for exceptional cleanup — containing the mess, gathering nails with a rolling magnet and even using a blower inside the garage to remove debris. The roofing crew finished new shingles and vents, and the flat section over the addition looked especially well done; the job wrapped up just before December rain and produced no leaks. The estimate felt reasonable, and interactions with owner Karl and his customer service team were pleasant. The detail that stands out is the thorough cleanup—the magnet and garage blower—and the fact the new roof held through the first storm.

2. Rex G.
Yelp | Sep 27, 2023 |

Rex G. shopped five companies before choosing Tag Roofing and Solar for a roof-and-solar overhaul more than a year ago. He picked them mainly because they inspired the most confidence that the complicated roof would be handled right and because their bundled price for roof plus solar beat the others. The house had a steeper pitch, a courtyard, and a newer back patio cover tied into the roof — details that sent some contractors walking. Tag tackled the full scope: removing the metal roof, the metal roof framing, and the original cedar shingles on what was still a modest residential job. The crew stayed polite, prompt, and careful, and they left the yard cleaner than he expected. He also passed Tag’s name to friends, who reported positive experiences. For the solar portion he explained they’d just bought a hot tub and planned an electric car; Tag recommended a 10KWh system so he wouldn’t need to add panels later. When the first Tru Up bill arrived he owed nothing for electricity production, and Tag continued to communicate well about follow-up questions. The detail that stuck with him was simple and concrete: the system covered his usage to the point that the first true-up bill came–

1. Keith H.
Yelp | Jan 12, 2024 |

Keith H. brought TAG Roofing — a local, non-chain crew — back to replace his home's main roof after they’d already re-roofed the flat roof over his enclosed patio. He appreciated that TAG didn’t push for an unnecessary full replacement even though the main roof was still relatively new; they focused on what needed attention and completed the work cleanly. A year earlier a leak had shown up on the flat roof; TAG checked, discovered it still fell within the warranty window, and repaired it without fuss. Office staff stayed friendly and responsive throughout the project, and when small misunderstandings popped up they were smoothed out to his satisfaction. The crew replaced outdated wind-turbine attic vents with fire ember–resistant vents, painted the skylight and other vent pipes to match the shingles, and left the roof looking much improved and ready for winter rains. Karl handled the job, and what stuck with him most were the warranty follow-up and the practical upgrades — concrete signs the company stands behind its work.

2. Ronald S.
Yelp | Jan 24, 2023 |

Ronald had TAG replace his roof three years earlier, and everything held up until a mid‑January storm dumped heavy rain and wind into his house. Two bedroom walls and the carpeting soaked through, so he called TAG and leaned on the company’s guarantee for help. A technician arrived within a few days, climbed onto the roof and inspected everything; he also checked the windows and the stucco but could not find a clear leak or a roofing defect. Ronald guessed the fierce wind had forced rain under the eaves, but neither man could prove it. What stood out was that TAG honored the guarantee with a prompt, hands‑on visit—roof inspection, window and stucco checks—rather than sending only promises. That quick, thorough response is the detail he remembers most.

3. J A.
Yelp | Apr 11, 2018 |

Lucy hired TAG about two years ago to re-roof her garage and expected a straightforward job. She later discovered the new roof now ponds water because crews — at Tom’s direction, she says — laid the ridges crosswise instead of sloping them toward the drains, so runoff collects side-to-side rather than flowing away. She also learned she has no warranty on file: Karl and Tom never submitted it, and when she called the warranty line at 1-800-922-5922 the representative had no record of the job or the company. She notes the nearby tree isn’t the cause — the ponding is a result of faulty installation — and that a two-ply roof voids warranty if ponding occurs. Replacing the work would cost about $8,500, and she left a one-star rating; her concrete takeaway for future customers is to confirm the installer actually files the warranty (or submit it yourself) and verify ridge orientation before the crew leaves.

1. Brian C.
Yelp | Feb 24, 2021 |

Brian chose Tag Roofing two years ago to replace his roof and install solar panels on his home, and it quickly proved to be the best decision he'd made in a long time. He hasn't paid an electricity bill in those two years and even carries a rolling credit of -439 kWh on his account. Karl at Tag Roofing shepherded the project from start to finish, keeping the installation smooth and on track. Brian credits Karl's hands-on coordination for the seamless experience, and the lasting result — two years without an energy bill and that -439 kWh credit — is what he highlights for anyone considering solar and roofing work.

2. Ally P.
Yelp | Jan 6, 2016 |

Ally P. contracted TAG Roofing a few years ago to replace the roof on her home, and the crew delivered solid workmanship. Recently a misunderstanding arose, and Karl came out in person to address it — he went the extra mile to resolve the issue and provide hands-on customer service. What lingered for her was that personal follow-up: a company that not only did a good job on the roof but also sent someone willing to make things right.

3. Kurt L.
Yelp | Mar 28, 2017 |

Kurt L. took Tag up on a low-cost flat-roof installation that came with a 10-year warranty for his home. Six years in, he started getting leaks and called Tag back to inspect. The technician declared the roof “shot” and in need of replacement, and when Kurt reminded him Tag had done the original job and it was under warranty the inspector visibly bristled. Tag performed only minimal patching, so Kurt grew tired of the back-and-forth and hired a different contractor even though four years remained on the warranty. The new crew uncovered what mattered most: Tag had installed the wrong drip edge from the start — a basic mistake that explained the leaks. In short, the job was cheap, but poor construction and dismissive service left him replacing a supposedly warranted roof early.

Long-term Satisfaction

Long-term satisfaction for Tag Construction drops to 3.8 ★ compared to early reviews. This decline is worse than 65% of installers we looked at.

Long-term reviews carry the most weight in our methodology because they are most representative of what you should be paying for: a system that will perform for years.
