The Verdict

The Solar Exchange is a gamble you can't afford to take. We found a disturbing pattern: customers report paying for systems that fail within months, then waiting weeks or months for callbacks that never come. One homeowner spent $100,000 on an off-grid installation and lost power, water, and internet when the system crashed less than a year later. The company stopped returning calls. Another scheduled a service visit, took time off work, and waited until 1:30 p.m. before calling to ask where the technician was. No one showed, no one called back, and the $300 minimum service fee loomed over the whole ordeal. We did find seven reviews praising clean installations and one customer who appreciated fast lightning-damage repairs. But workmanship means nothing if the company vanishes when the system stops working. Three separate reviews describe the same outcome: repeated no-shows, months of silence, and problems left unresolved.

If you need an off-grid system and can't risk being abandoned mid-crisis, choose a company with proven post-installation support. The Solar Exchange may show up for the install, but the odds they'll show up for the repair are too low to bet on.

3 Stories That Stood Out

1. Mark S
BBB | Jul 31, 2023 |

Mark contracted the company nearly a year ago to design and install a large off-grid solar system—about a $100,000 project. From the start he encountered persistent problems with the installation, and those faults never got fully resolved. He struggled for months to get timely repairs and support; what began with an owner who seemed attentive turned into repeated non-response as the troubles mounted. The situation has now escalated to the point that he is without electricity, water or internet, and the installer has stopped returning calls. With the company unwilling to honor maintenance and repair obligations, he has had to hire a different firm. The image that remains: a costly off-grid system that failed repeatedly and left him without basic services while the installer went silent.

2. James L.
Yelp | Dec 9, 2022 |

James booked a morning service call with a local company that enforces a $300 minimum. He waited at home from 9:00 until 1:30 and no technician showed up. After phoning the office he was told they would check and call back, but the promised return call never came; he rang again at 2:30 and canceled the appointment. He walked away having avoided paying the $300 fee and called the company "very greedy" — the missed window plus lack of communication was the lasting takeaway.

3. Ken Martin
Google | Jul 23, 2021 |

Ken arranged a scheduled service visit for his system, but the crew missed the appointment twice. He waited five months and never received any follow-up from the company — still no response.

What You Can Expect

01

1. Chris “CSKI” Ski
Google | May 6, 2023 |

Chris “CSKI” Ski brought the company in to evaluate an upgrade to his existing residential solar array. Taylor came out, laid out several options, and steered him toward the more logical, cost-effective path without pressuring the pricier alternative. The crew showed up on time, stayed polite and professional, and left the site exceptionally tidy — even stacking the old panels neatly inside so they were completely out of the way. That attention to cleanup and practical advice made the job feel less like a sales pitch and more like thoughtful service. He’s already looking forward to his "phase 2" upgrade with them.

2. Holly Hamling
Google | Dec 6, 2022 |

Holly endured three days of cold, cloudy weather and watched her solar batteries go into sleep mode. She rang Solar Exchange for help; technicians Matt and Mike arrived, diagnosed the issue, and got the system back online. Matt also took many of her calls beforehand and patiently walked her through how the system behaves and what to expect during cloudy stretches. The quick on-site fix combined with Matt’s steady, explanatory support left her confident about handling similar weather-related downtime in the future.

1. Richard McClellan
Google | Nov 15, 2022 |

When lightning damaged his solar array several years ago, Richard turned to Matt Hamilton and Solar Exchange and they moved quickly to get the system back online. After that emergency repair, they performed multiple upgrades over time, improving and modernizing the installation. Those updates left him with a very capable system he expects to last for years. The prompt emergency response and ongoing support are what stood out most — he plans to go back to them for future upgrades.

2. Stephanie Nelson
Google | Nov 26, 2022 |

Stephanie has been a customer for about ten years, living with a system that went through many upgrades and the occasional emergency. Over that time she turned to Matt and his technicians repeatedly, and they showed up quickly and handled each job professionally. What stood out after a decade was their steady promptness in both planned upgrades and unexpected fixes — the consistency that earned her trust.

3. Ken Martin

SolarReviews | Jun 1, 2015 |

Gene upgraded from a DIY setup to a professionally installed solar system two years ago and has relied on it ever since. He discovered the array powers several TVs, the washing machine, pumps and home heating without trouble — even through stretches of several cloudy days. The installation finished neatly and looks great, and the crew behaved professionally throughout. When lightning damaged a component last year, the company delivered a replacement the very next day, leaving him with a durable system and a memorable level of responsiveness.

2. Jim McGregor
Google | Feb 11, 2021 |

Jim hired The Solar Exchange for five separate solar projects — installations and ongoing maintenance — at his Mesa home and at a property in the White Mountains. He found a team that understood the technology, supplied and installed only quality equipment, and had the qualifications to handle both off-grid systems up in the mountains and grid-tied arrays in town. They maintained his systems across both sites, keeping performance steady over time. After interviewing many solar companies, he ended up relying on The Solar Exchange exclusively — the standout detail being one contractor managing five installs plus long-term upkeep across two very different locations and system types.

3. Shannon H.
Yelp | Aug 11, 2022 |

Shannon paid $20,000 for a solar installation on her home, then discovered the panels never worked. She ended up losing everything after the system failed, and now cannot sell the house because the property remains tied to a lease for those nonfunctional panels. The clearest takeaway: a large up-front payment combined with an untransferable lease left her financially exposed and practically unable to move.

Long-term Satisfaction

Long-term customers rate The Solar Exchange 5.0 ★ — higher than early reviews. This growth is better than 100% of installers we looked at.

Long-term reviews carry the most weight in our methodology because they are most representative of what you should be paying for: a system that will perform for years.
